Two are better than one…
If one falls down, his friend can help him up.
But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up…
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
Home education is not for sissies.
In choosing this lifestyle, your family embraced a journey that brings tremendous joy — but also daily stress and challenges that can seem overwhelming, at times.
There are days of blessing and joy that you will remember and treasure forever.
There are also days you will dream of the big yellow bus coming to take them all away for just a day!
Because home is where you do school, you are often drowning in clutter, surrounded by chaos, and the job you started may last two decades (or more) if you see it through to completion. And because home is your “workplace,” there is nowhere to go to leave it all behind. Essentially, you live at your place of employment.
The struggle is real. The blessings are great. The stakes are high.
I know, because I lived this life for 20 years. Those were fabulous, frenzied, and fantastic years of blessing, but also struggle. There are many things I would do differently if I could start over. But through it all, God was – and is – faithful. Looking back, I see home education was as much about growing me up spiritually as it was about teaching my children academically.
It should come as no surprise that I see the value in spurring one another on. When I read, “Encourage one another daily as long it’s called today…” in Hebrews 3:13, I just want to shout, “AMEN!”
The Christian life was not intended to be lived alone. We need each other. We need the fellowship and support in our local churches, Sunday School classes, and small groups. But I also believe those of us called to the high and holy challenge of home education need someone else in our lives who has embraced that same call.
No one understands a homeschool mom like another woman on the same journey. No one can celebrate our successes, spur us on, or offer a gentle rebuke like someone who has walked (or is walking) the same path we are.
About halfway through my own 20-year home education journey, I began meeting with a friend for mutual encouragement and accountability. Like me, she was called to home educate. God used — and still uses — this godly woman to bless me in powerful ways. I am a different person because of this relationship.
A few years later, I began mentoring my teenage daughter and a small group of her friends. The format for those relationships gave birth to M.U.M. 3D: Moms Uplifting Moms.
After reading the Titus 2 mentoring passage, I asked God for a practical way to apply it. This simple framework is the answer He gave. I have shared this method with adult women, as well as teenage girls.
It is intended to help women learn to support and nurture one another, through intentional, authentic relationships with others who share their passion and calling.
Whether you’re a homeschool support group leader hoping to minister to the mothers in your group, or a mom who’s looking for a way to stop feeling overwhelmed and isolated by the demands of home education, M.U.M. 3D can be tailored to your needs. The method works well with a small group of 3-4 women, but is equally effective in a one-on-one accountability partnership.
I hope you are planning to attend a homeschool convention this year (if you wonder why you should, please be sure to check out this blog post!) and I also hope it will be one where our sponsor, A Reason For, will be sending me to present this workshop:
3 Simple – But Significant – Changes to Transform Your Homeschool Journey
My prayer is that we will spur one another on to impact moms — and the kingdom of God — through this mentoring program.
Please join me!
