So the word of God spread.
The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly
and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.
Acts 6:7
When the Word of God is released, transformation happens. Lives change. People are drawn to Jesus.
The verse above says “the number of disciples” increased … not just converts, but disciples. Real, genuine, Christ-followers! Remember the last words of Jesus at the end of Matthew? Jesus commanded, “Go and make disciples” – not converts.
The Word of God draws people to follow Jesus completely, to be all in.
It’s remarkable that even the priests – the leaders of the Jewish faith – proclaimed faith in Jesus. For many of Israel’s religious leaders, Jesus was Public Enemy #1. They were the ones who would see to His execution. How extraordinary to watch the unlikely and unexpected come to Jesus.
Oh, to be in Jerusalem during those days!
- To see Jewish priests come to Jesus – amazing!
- To see the Word of God spread – wonderful!
- And to see the number of disciples increase rapidly – remarkable!
What an exciting time for the church.
But wait – don’t we have the same Word of God today? Do we not also have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit? Is it not possible for the Word of God to spread, to see the unlikely come to Jesus, and to see the number of disciples increase rapidly? Yes! Yes, it is!
Oh, Lord, bring it! We want to see REVIVAL happen in our “Jerusalem” today!
The Word of God is foundational to making that a reality. The events unfolding in the book of Acts need not only be a church history lesson. They can be a recipe for the church today: when the Word goes forth, it does not return void.
Let’s start now. Here. Me in my Jerusalem and you in yours. Let’s make sure our children, grandchildren, our friends, and our neighbors hear and see the Word. Who is that “unlikely” person in your life and mine? Let’s make sure the Word reaches them, also.
St. Francis of Assisi said it well: “Preach the Gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.”
As we soak up the Word each morning and allow it to be squeezed out of us throughout the day, we can drench people in our “Jerusalem” with the love of Christ. As we read and the write the Word, we will be propelled to pray and speak it. And as we then live, share, and release the Word, others will be drawn to the Living Word – Jesus.
Oh, Lord. Light that fire! Let it begin with us! Draw us to Your Word. Fill us up and equip us to speak, teach, pray, proclaim, and release Your Word through thought, word, attitude, and action. Bring revival to our land by first bringing it to our own hearts!
It’s not too late to join us during the remaining weeks of October
as we read, write and study verses about the Word of God.
