She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her…
Proverbs 31:26-28
Mothers come in all shapes and sizes. We come with different temperaments, natural gifts, and unique abilities. We are a work in progress ourselves, learning from our Lord as we also diligently try to teach and train our children.
Whether we’re a great cook, a gifted pianist, or a natural athlete, every Christian mother longs to speak with wisdom, to release faithful instruction, and to model a good work ethic. Fortunately, those aspirations can be developed and cultivated by commitment to faithfully establishing routines and habits in our daily lives. We choose to be women of the Word. We make time to pray to our Lord. We tend to the affairs of our home. We do our job today—and tomorrow we get up and do it again.
As the blessings of these daily habits bear fruit in our lives, “have to” gives way to “want to.” Time passes, and the rhythm of life becomes “delight to.” We treasure our time with Jesus. We need Him. We reap the blessings of loving and serving our family from the overflow of daily seeking Him. This intimacy fills us up, so we have something to pour out.
We women are good at setting goals. Often these are more wishes and dreams than realistic resolutions—at times, they are birthed from shame, disappointment, or even self-loathing. This Mother’s Day, can we agree to celebrate the fullness and goodness of life … the delight of knowing we are His and the security of our destiny for eternity? Can we ask Him to stir up our yearning to be faithful, and to then teach us to be faithful? Can we shift our focus off of self, and set our hearts and minds firmly on Him? Can we commit to seek Him spiritually and to reject idleness physically?
There’s a Chinese proverb that says, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” Approximately three years from today, you and I will have journeyed 1,000 days. How many of them will begin with prayer and time in the Word? On how many will we consult, worship, and invite our Lord to join us for the day’s journey?
Can we choose to be faithful?
Can we commit ourselves to Him?
Can we begin with today?
Happy Mother’s Day to all my fellow moms. Enjoy your flowers. Eat your candy. Read every card, enjoy the hugs from your lovelies … and give them back the gift of a faithful mother, who loves God and reflects His love.
