The Sounds of “-ed” (FREE Printable Activity)

Today we’re back to tackle another wacky phonetic quirk of the English language — the three sounds of the suffix “-ed” — with a fun, free printable activity. Why are we focusing on this particular combination of letters? Well, this one ornery suffix can sound like “ed”, “t”, or “d”, and that can be confusing for little ones, so we’re here to help them practice.

It’s been awfully rainy around my house, so I guess my driveway/swamp has my brain thinking about water. Aside from the fact my kids love playing in the rain, there really isn’t any other reason I’d choose collecting rain drops in buckets for this project … but in honor of these rainy first days of March, here we go!

Set up:

Print out your cloud, raindrops, and buckets. I printed mine on card stock for durability; the raindrops and cloud can be laminated if you want them to last longer. The little buckets can be folded over and cut out as one piece for each back/front bucket set. Take a razor blade and cut across the top edge of the bucket with the sound label (“ed”, “d”, or “t”), then staple, glue, or tape the sides so it can hold your raindrop words. Give it a quick bend at the top to make it gape open a bit and make it easier for the raindrops to slip inside.

Play:

This little sound sorting game is pretty straightforward. Each bucket is labeled with one of the sounds produced by the suffix “-ed.” For each sound, there are ten matching raindrops among the words we’ve already prepared (and I included extra blank raindrops so you can add your own words to expand your game and child’s skills).

  • Arrange the raindrops on the cloud, placing the three buckets below.
  • Explain to your child that the “ed” sound is tricky, and can have three different sounds.
  • If this concept is completely new to your child, you may want to read through the words a few times together.
  • Have them sort out their raindrops and then, using the self-checking sheet included in your download, have them check that their buckets were sorted correctly, and fix any tricky words that might have accidentally dripped into the wrong bucket.

Happy soggy sorting!
