As the dropping temperatures freeze my rabbits’ water bowls and the last fall leaves are blown away by frigid winds, I’m reminded Old Man Winter has arrived in town. Even as a grown woman, snow is still exciting to me. Graceful and beautiful, quietly blanketing the world, it’s downright charming. Granted, I don’t live far enough north to find it a nuisance … here in our corner of Arkansas, snow is just an occasional treat.
Whether we get a dusting or a couple of inches, you quickly see social media posts of children scurrying around in their warmest winter gear, scraping precious flakes together to make snowmen (miniature ones, if need be).
Who doesn’t like a snowman? They’re magical and endearing. Something about them warms us on the inside, even if we’re freezing on the outside. So why not embrace the winter weather with an adorable snowman ornament craft?
I happened across an image of little snowmen Christmas tree ornaments made from LED tealights. How cute is that? I suppose you could hang them almost anywhere, but the tree is an easy choice this time of year. The only thing I didn’t have already lying around were the LED tealights (available at craft stores or just about anywhere that sells home or Christmas décor). After securing them, I simply raided my craft stash and found everything else I needed.
You will need:
- LED tealights
- black permanent marker
- hot glue gun & glue sticks
- ribbon scraps (for scarves, bow ties, hat trim, and a way to hang the finished product)
- pipe cleaner (optional for the headband on the earmuffs)
- pom poms (also optional if you want to make earmuffs)
- black construction paper for the hats
The instructions are fairly obvious once you see a photo of the finished ornament, but here are the basic steps:
- I started with the face, took a permanent marker, and drew six little circles. Two a bit larger for the eyes, then four smaller circles slightly drawn up into a smile.
- Decide what accessories you want to make for your snowman or lady, earmuffs or a hat.
- The earmuffs take about an inch and a quarter piece of pipe cleaner, hot glued to the top of your snowman. On each end of the pipe cleaner attach a small pom pom.
- To make the hat, you simply cut it out of black construction paper edging it with ribbon. Then hot glue it to the top of your tealight.
- When you turn the light on, the glowing light becomes the snowman’s nose.
- Glue on a bow tie or neck scarf at the bottom.
- Attach a ribbon hanger to the back with hot glue.
These would make great party favors, fun crafts for church or school groups, or simply a creative indoor activity when the days get too cold to play outside. So, for all those Elsa fans out there …
Do you want to build a snowman?
Get to it, and melt somebody’s heart with your special gift this Christmas season.
