Mother’s Day Handprint Wall Hanging

Family Life
mother's day handprint craft mother holiday

Mother’s Day is a special time dedicated to acknowledging and thanking the mothers around us for their self-sacrificing labor. I know being a mother is hands-down the HARDEST — yet the most rewarding — job I’ve ever had. There are no vacation days, no sick day … it’s being available and on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

I’d like to share a simple Mother’s Day craft that would mean the world to so many mothers and grandmothers in your life. It’s easily tailored to fit the season of life or situation that the special mothers in your circle are in. We will be choosing a meaningful scripture verse or saying, to go along with a child’s handprints, made to look like beautiful blooming flowers.

Supplies:

  • paper — simple white copy paper would work, but you could also use card stock
  • construction paper (color of your choice)
  • black sharpie (or color of your choice)
  • green sharpie or paint for “flower” stems
  • paint (color of your choice) — since your child will be placing their hands in this, I’d recommend a water-based paint!
  • roughly 45″ of ribbon
  • paper punch

Directions:

  1. Choose a scripture or saying that you believe will be meaningful to the receiver of the finished gift, and using the black sharpie write it at the top of your page. Should you prefer to print it out with your computer as I did in the photos, that would also be an option. (see our list of verse ideas below)
  2. Pour a bit of paint onto a plate, and carefully help your child press their hands in it one at a time. If needed, use a paint brush to help them completely cover the palm side of their hand for printing.
  3. Assist your child as they slowly place their hands one at a time to the center right and left of the page making their prints. I suggest starting with the palm, and rolling the hand upward helping them press evenly from palm to fingertip.
  4. Paint on some green stems and leaves, and set aside to dry.Mother's Day handprint wall hanging craft
  5. Once dry, using a glue stick or super glue attach your paint project page to a piece of construction paper. Choose a complimenting color to your paint as it will frame your painting.
  6. With the paper punch, punch two holes at the top edges of your project. Roughly one inch in from the side and top.handprint craft Mother's Day wall hanging
  7. From the backside of your project push the ribbon through the hole to the front on each side.Mother's Day craft handprint wall hanging
  8. Tie a knot, leaving 12″of ribbon on on the other side of your project to be able to hang it on the wall, then finish off the front by fashioning your ribbon into a bow.craft Mother's Day handprint

Scripture choice ideas:

Note: It’s a small project, so don’t feel compelled to use the entire verse.

  • James 1:17 — Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above (This is a universal choice for the project that would work easily for most anyone)
  • Psalm 127:3 — Children are a heritage of Jehovah (or of the Lord)
  • Galatians 4:28 — Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise. (or simply paraphrase as, “We are children of promise”)
  • Psalm 127:4 — As arrows in the hand of a mighty man…
  • 3 John 1:4 — Greater joy have I none…
  • Luke 18:16 — Suffer the little children to come unto me, or For to such belongeth the kingdom of God
  • Psalm 147:13 — He hath blessed thy children within thee (maybe for an expectant mother who also has older children)
  • Proverbs 20:7 — Blessed are his children after him
  • Proverbs 31:28 — Her children rise up and call her blessed
  • Proverbs 31:29 — Thou excellest them all

Another possibility is a quote, such as, “Love grows here” or something similar.

Be sure and write the child’s name and the date on the back. Time has a way of helping us forget whose handprint is whose.

Blessings to all the mothers this Mother’s Day … and even more importantly, may we be that blessing to those around us.

    Bridgitt —

    I absolutely LOVE this idea!

As a GRAMMY, I’ll also add that this would be a fabulous idea for a grandmother, as well.

In fact, if there are multiple children in the family, what fun to create a hand print flower garden — shorter stems for littler hands…and maybe write the first name and age of each child on the palm of the hand print.
