Montessori-Inspired Letter Matching Puzzle (with FREE Download!)

When our little ones begin school, learning their letters and how to read is always high on the list of firsts — and for a very good reason. Language is one of the most important subjects we teach them, because communicating effectively is a key part of functioning in any society.

Many of you may know that the teaching methods of Maria Montessori have always been an inspiration to me. My ultimate goal as a homeschooling mama is to make education fun whenever possible. It makes those school days more pleasant for everyone involved.

For early learners, differentiating between the upper and lower case letters can be a challenging endeavor. And so, with the Montessori learning approach in mind, I’ve created this simple, cut-out owl puzzle to help those upper-and-lower-case lessons stick. The puzzle is self-checking; with no two pieces with the same shape, a correct shape match is also a letter match.Montessori upper lower case matching puzzle

You’ll simply need to download the PDF file, and you’ll be ready for educational fun in no time.

Directions:

1. Print both the black-and-white lower case page and the colored upper case page on card stock.

2. Cut out the pieces of the colored owl. (My pointed curvy little lines will most likely require that step to be done by an adult.) If you want cutting practice for your child, you could print a spare page for little fingers to make an attempt, but in my experience, it would be a very talented PreK — or even early elementary — student who could master cutting this puzzle well.

3. Present the child with the black-and-white page, and using the cut out pieces, let them build the owl in color on top of the black and white version, matching up the uppercase letters to the lower as they go along. Again, the fact that each piece is different and only fits one way makes the puzzle self-correcting.

Because I know how creative a homeschool mom can be, today’s free download also includes a blank owl template in case you want to let your child color his own or make up other games to play.

Happy playing … and I wish you a peaceful, joyful school day!
