Our ‘Do It’ List is now in its THIRD year of publication! We love hearing how this simple tool has helped so many families tackle their homes — one task and one day at a time. Our regular readers know we do our best to distinguish between pursuing perfection (unattainable!) and excellence (stewarding what we have well). The end goal is never a clean house, but a home that stands ready for the other, more important things — including nurturing, learning, and ministry — that need to happen to fulfill our calling to serve God and others.
The beauty of our ‘Do It’ List is primarily its simplicity … everything is on ONE page! We feature three sections: daily, weekly, and monthly, that serve to break down regular home management and maintenance tasks into simple, attainable pieces.
If you have incorporated our ‘Do It’ List into your daily rhythm, we hope you are experiencing the joy of a well-managed home. Cultivating new habits takes time. If you continue to have unchecked boxes, just keep on keeping on. It takes time for new routines to become habits. If you need inspiration for any of those listed tasks, you can click the ‘Do It’ List tab on our home page to visit our archives and check out previous posts that provide helpful tips, tricks, and hacks.
This month, let’s devote a few minutes to all those blank lines under each section. The extra lines are there for you to tailor this tool to the specific needs of your home and your family. Some add-ins may be one-time only or seasonal, while others may need to be added every day, week, or month.
Do It Today
- Water plants.
- Feed animals.
- Walk the dog.
- Call one elderly friend.
Are there other daily chores for summer (or specifically, the month of July) that you might want to add?
Do It This Week
- Bless a neighbor (take newspaper to the door, share vegetables or flowers from your garden).
- Weed the garden.
- Dead-head flowers.
- Try a new recipe (consider making my Summer Pasta Salad).
My weekly add-ons are prompted by some landscaping projects my husband and I are currently doing at our house, but you may have other weekly summer chores to drop in here.
Do It This Month
- Pick blueberries (And if you do, you might want to try my Banana-Blueberry Bread!)
- Read the Declaration of Independence aloud as a family.
- Write a letter to a missionary.
- Paint a room in your house.
- Make homemade ice cream.
- Plan a family night (consider a movie, board game, or flashlight tag).
July can be a great time to tackle some annual chores, as there is no school work to do (and none to grade, either!), but we moms — in our frenzy to “get stuff done” — need to also leave time for some family fun.
We hope these suggestions either inspire you directly or spark another idea of your own. Whether it’s one of ours or one unique to you, consider adding something new to those empty lines on your ‘Do It’ List this month. We would love to know what you choose. Leave us a note in the comments to share how you are “filling in the blanks” for July!
