Sunday Soaking: This is War (Introducing January’s ‘Write The Word’)

Sunday Soaking
the armor of God devotional encouragement

We are at war.

And I’m not talking about the war on terror or the war on drugs. (Those are important battles to fight, and I’m grateful for our men and women who devote their lives to fight those wars, as they serve at home and abroad.)

The battle raging for us is a spiritual one:

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,
but against the rulers, against the authorities,
against the powers of this dark world
and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Ephesians 6:12

I’ll use the old adage, “you fight fire with fire” as my starting point to coin a new phrase:  You fight spiritual battles with spiritual weapons.

It’s time for the body of Christ — that’s us! — to wake up, acknowledge we are at war, and be ready to engage and fight the good fight. (II Timothy 4:7)

Paul wraps up his letter to the Ephesians with a call to arms:

“Put on the full armor of God…”
Ephesians 6:11a

He reminds us why we need to suit up and be ready:  the devil is a schemer. (Ephesians 6:11b)

Living in the 21st-century western world brings blessings of comfort than can easily lead to complacency. We must engage. We must be ready.

We are at war. Make no mistake.

And the only way to win the war is to be ready to fight. The weapons we need are laid out in the Armor of God passage, Ephesians 6:10-19:

  • the Belt of Truth
  • the Breastplate of Righteousness
  • the Gospel Shoes of Peace
  • the Shield of Faith
  • the Helmet of Salvation
  • the Sword of the Spirit

We’re devoting the first days of this month’s Write the Word installment to this powerful passage. Then, we’ll finish January by writing verses that help us examine the first element of the armor, the Belt of Truth, in more depth. In coming months, we’ll drill down on the other weapons mentioned in these verses.

It’s noteworthy that Paul begins this passage with the word “finally” — prompting us to look back at what came before. How interesting to see that the two previous passages explore our most personal relationships: the body of Christ, wives and husbands, children and parents. Perhaps this suggests two things:

  1.  The evil one goes after relationships.
  2.  The evil one wants to mess with those who are near and dear to us.

As wives and mamas, we’re gonna FIGHT! Are you ready? Grab your gear, suit up, and let’s do this!
