Capture This Historic Season With A COVID-19 Time Capsule!

Family Life
COVID-19 time capsule memories family history

Some of us are truly suffering during these strange days as our nation battles the COVID-19 pandemic … but many of us are inconvenienced. We are working, eating, shopping, playing, schooling, and doing many other __ings quite differently than a few months ago. We’ve learned to adapt to a new normal for now.

But I wonder what kinds of memories we are making to look back on? I wonder what our children will remember from this season of their lives?

We thought it might be interesting to help you capture this season – and specifically the thoughts of your children – by creating a time capsule. To help you do it, we’ve put together our own twist on the classic game, “Twenty Questions.”  A printable “COVID-19 Time Capsule Memories” list can be downloaded with the link below. Two different versions, one with “I” questions and another with “we” questions, are available so you can do this together as a group or print one for each family member. When you are all finished, add the pages to a box or other container  (maybe an empty Clorox wipe cylinder – what could be more appropriate?) and seal them with the printable “Covid-19 Memories – Open in 2030″ label we’ve provided, or simply place a note on top with the same message.

Other ideas to include in your time capsule:

  • Print out news articles or cut out clippings from your local newspaper
  • Gather several pieces of artwork created by your children
  • Print copies of photos taken during this time
  • Drop in cards or notes received from friends and family (emails can be printed and included in the box)

While we’d never want to minimize the very legitimate suffering so many are experiencing now, this exercise is one way to redeem this unusual time by creating lasting, tangible memories for you and your family. You might even challenge grandparents and friends to join in, too. Since many older folks are self-isolating during this time, perhaps your kids could call a grandparent or elderly neighbor and conduct a phone interview to add to the time capsule.

And, of course, we would love to hear about some of the interesting ways your family may have answered these questions! We invite you to leave a comment or share photos of your creations on our Facebook, or use #areasonforhomeschool in any photos you post to Instagram.

Laura, thank you so much for all your encouraging words in your emails! I don’t have a lot of older women to help spur me on, especially in homeschooling, so I truly treasure your wisdom. I love the time capsule idea, because I have made it a point with my family to “thrive”, not just “survive” during this time!! Thank you for the inspiration and I can’t wait to get started!!
